Resources for Parents

We talk to parents daily that are concerned that their children are using some kind of drug – from marijuana to alcohol to the latest trend, prescription drugs. According to the National Youth Network, about 1.1 million youth age 12 to 17 meet the diagnostic criteria for dependence on drugs, and about 1 million are treated for alcohol dependency.

If you are concerned that your child is using drugs, you have a number of options. And you are NOT alone. We offer a number of drug resources for parents, from drug test kits to anonymous forums to a drug testing blog where you can hear what other parents have done.

Our drug resources differ depending on your child. Please select the situation that best describes your environment and immediately get help.

I Suspect My Child is Using Drugs

We applaud you for taking the initiative to seek help if you suspect your child may be abusing drugs or alcohol. We at Drug Test Central want to walk you through this difficult journey, and help make this as easy as possible. Our goal is to provide you with the resources that you need, and make it so that you are not alone in this process.

  • Has your child’s grades started to fluctuate recently?
  • Is your child difficult to get out of bed?
  • Does your child frequently have a rebellious attitude and a personality that you’re not used to seeing?
  • Does your child hang out with a crowd you don’t know during or after school?
  • Has your child started hiding their text messages, IMs, and Facebook in a suspicious manner?
  • Does your child insist on staying out later than your ideal curfew?
  • Have you recently caught your child in a lie?
  • Has it been brought to your attention that your child is not participating in class?
  • Has your child made excuses for their behavior, or told you the “You just don’t understand,” speech?
  • Have you caught your child sneaking around the house in the middle of the night?

If you answered “yes” to more than 5 of the above questions, your child could be abusing drugs. Testing your children for drugs and alcohol is not an easy thing to do and you may be feeling overwhelmed, but we are here to support you throughout this journey and offer advice for every step of the way. It can be difficult to broach the subject of drug testing with your child. We recommend that if you have suspicions, have your child submit to a drug test right after a night out, at the end of the weekend, or first thing in the morning (particularly for urine tests). Some substances are out of the body’s system and undetectable after a few days, so timing the drug test is important. We put together several parent kits so that you can be assured that you are testing for the most common possibilities.

We suggest if your child is found negative that you continue to test, giving your child an incentive to “say no” at the next party.
