Primary Care Substance Abuse Treatments Overview

Traditional substance abuse treatments can be categorized as offering inpatient rehab, outpatient rehab, or both. These are the most traditional of methodological approaches in regard to treating chemical dependency. They often employ counseling/therapy as a cornerstone.

Secondary Care Substance Abuse Treatments Overview

If continued attention or treatment is necessary and the resources are available, support groups may be recommended to the patient. Such groups include twelve step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous, extended care within the inpatient rehab facility, or halfway housing. Find secondary care programs.

Inpatient Extended Care

Extended care follows primary care substance abuse treatments but often keeps a similar format. The program can range anywhere from 30 additional days to two or three years in length. Mental healthcare professionals report the odds of patients maintaining continuous sobriety are greater with an extended stay.

Intensive Outpatient Programs

Intensive outpatient rehab refers to programs characterized by daily or near daily group therapy sessions and, less frequently, individual therapy sessions. Additionally, members learn to rely on one another, develop and practice the tools learned in sessions, and sometimes engage in out-of-session group activities. Because there is less structure and control, individuals have more responsibility for their daily lives.

Halfway Housing

Following a primary care or extended care drug treatment program, a common next step is living in a halfway house with other members in recovery. Often a counselor will live under the same roof, organize group meetings, keep track of inhabitants' programs of recovery, and even provide drug testing services. Twelve Step Programs

The Twelve step program utilizes therapeutic strategies that guide individuals to become actively involved in a step-by-step process. Twelve step programs begin with acceptance of having a problem through to using the tools gained in previous steps to help others with similar challenges.
